Celebrating Pride Month: Embracing Diversity in Children's Literature
Testimonial
“At All About Books, we proudly support the LGBTQIA+ community and are committed to providing literature that celebrates the diversity of children and family structures. Our focus on themes of love and acceptance extends beyond June and continues throughout the entire year.”

Brittany Winans, Marketing Specialist at All About Books

All About Books is honoring Pride Month by spotlighting stories that spark imagination and foster a sense of belonging in young readers.  Children grow up in many different kinds of families and become many different kinds of people, and we believe it’s essential for them to see their own lives reflected on the page or simply to gain a window into others' experiences. We’re also recognizing the trailblazing authors and illustrators within the LGBTQ+ community who have shaped children’s literature, including Margaret Wise Brown, whose bedtime classic Goodnight Moon helped define early childhood reading, and author-illustrator Todd Parr, whose joyful messages and bold, playful art celebrate every kind of family.

Julian is a Mermaid

Julian sees beautiful mermaids on the subway and realizes he would also like to be a mermaid. With luminous illustrations, Julian transforms himself. But what happens when his abuela sees Julian as a mermaid? This story of acceptance and encouragement is a modern classic for the LGBTQ+ community.

The Family Book

Todd Parr joyfully reminds us that every family is special in its own way. This bright, wacky, and welcoming book includes a family with two mommies, helping children from LGBTQ+ families feel seen, celebrated, and included.

Choices

At the local pool, a young girl contemplates the choices that will sculpt her future. From the seemingly trivial to the profoundly impactful decisions, Choices playfully prompts readers to cherish their actions and thoughts. Featuring a vibrant array of LGBTQ+ characters, Choices showcases the beauty of diversity and individuality. - Also available in English/Spanish Bilingual

Pink is for Boys

Pink is for boys . . . and girls . . . and everyone! This timely and timeless board book rethinks and reframes the stereotypical blue/pink gender binary, empowering kids and their grown-ups to express themselves in every color of the rainbow. Featuring a diverse group of children, Pink is for Boys invites and encourages young kids to enjoy what they love, whether it’s racing cars and playing baseball or loving unicorns and dressing up.

My Mama is a Mechanic & My Papa is a Princess

These playful stories from author-illustrator Doug Cenko celebrate parent-child imaginative play, showing that creativity and connection don’t have to follow traditional gender roles. With charm and humor, Cenko’s characters challenge expectations—mamas fix cars and papas twirl in tutus. These books invite children to see themselves and their grown-ups in all kinds of roles, encouraging every family to embrace the joy of being exactly who they are.
