Supporting Toddler Development Through Engaging Books and Literacy Programing
Testimonial
"All About Books is very proud to partner with Reach Out and Read and provide books to support the Book Showcase. I've worked with Anna McBee for many years, and it's awesome to see how she educates providers on how to use the books on an even deeper level and further enhance a Reach Out and Read well-child visit. We are happy to support this initiative for another year and are excited to see its growth beyond the Carolinas."

Everyday Topics/Engaging Rich Text

Books that touch on topics that are relevant to toddler-aged children, such as going to bed, recognizing animals, saying hello and goodbye, and mealtime, can be helpful during these years.

A Day on the Farm with The Very Hungry Caterpillar

“It’s a sunny day on the farm with The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Who will he meet? From horses near the big red barn to little ducklings in a pond, discover new farmyard friends in this tabbed board book with easy-to-flip tabs, easy-to-read text.”

Developmental Highlights & Diverse Elements: This is a great choice for recognizing animals. With few words on the page, it is an engaging text. This book may also be a good option for children experiencing motor delays as the E-Z Turn tabs help children learn to easily turn the pages.

Goodnight Veggies

“As the sun begins to set, the tomatoes are tuckered out, the cucumbers are calm, and the beets are simply beat. Diana Murray and Zachariah OHora’s charming story, now in a Spanish-English bilingual edition, celebrates the turning of day to night with a perfect bedtime ritual for plants—and humans—everywhere”

Developmental Highlights & Diverse Elements: This bilingual board book is perfect size for toddlers’ hands, with Spanish and English text in two different colors for ease of reading. This book is a great option to use when discussing both healthy eating habits and setting good bedtime routines.

Repetition, Rhyming, Predictable Texts

Rhyming and Repetition can be fun and introduces children to the rhythm of language which helps them learn sounds and identify language formation.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

This classic children’s book offers a wide array of opportunities to engage with children. “In rhyming text, readers will meet such creatures as a green frog, a blue horse, and a red bird in this introduction to colors.” This book offers rhyming, repetition, and predictable texts all of which engage children in a way that helps support language development.

Developmental Highlights & Diverse Elements: This book could be a great choice for children experiencing speech and language delay because the repetition in the story will help them learn language. Additionally, the rhymes offer an opportunity to let the child fill in the rhyming and predictable word as he or she develops. Furthermore, it offers an opportunity to ask questions about the story like, “what do you think Brown Bear will see next?” This book includes illustrations of Black and Hispanic children as well as a teacher with glasses.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

“I’ll meet you at the top of the coconut tree. When all the letters of the alphabet race one another up the coconut tree, will there be enough room? A rollicking alphabet chant that has been a children’s favorite for more than twenty years! Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault’s rhythmic text keeps the beat with Caldecott Honor illustrator Lois Ehlert’s bold, cheerful art.”

Developmental Highlights & Diverse Elements: This book includes rhyming, repetition and predictable texts all of which engage children in a way that helps support language development, making it a great choice for all children, but can specifically be helpful for children experiencing speech and language delay because the repetition in the story will help the child learn language. The rhymes offer an opportunity to let the child fill in the rhyming and predictable word as he or she develops, and it also offers an opportunity to ask questions about the story like, “Do you think the letter’s will make it to the top of the coconut tree?”

If I Could Keep You Little…

“If I Could Keep You Little speaks straight to every parent’s heart, exploring the powerful feeling of wanting your child to grow up while savoring every moment. A new favorite, this book showcases Marianne’s ability to beautifully illustrate the complex emotions we all have: If I could keep you little, I’d keep you close to me. But then I’d miss you growing into who you’re meant to be!”

Developmental Highlights & Diverse Elements: Like many of the other books mentioned, this book offers simple rhymes important for language development, and it also provides opportunities to parents/caregivers to share both their love for the child as well as the joy of watching a child grow through each stage of life. This book includes illustrations of Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals as well as a child with glasses.

If You’re Happy and You Know It

“Babies, toddlers, and parents will love to sing and act out their favorite nursery rhyme while learning simple commands.”

Developmental Highlights & Diverse Elements: The rhymes, song, and interaction of this classic children’s song make this book a great choice for toddlers. This book may also be a good option for a child with vision loss, because it has rhymes that involve simple commands (clapping, kick your legs, hug a friend) that the child can engage in. This book also depicts Black, White, Asian and Hispanic children playing together.
